One months casualty reports do not make a trend. We learned that last spring with similar declarations about the end of the insurgency. Yet US dead were almost identical with those of 2004 along with increased attacks on Iraqi targets. 3 days into this month there are already 8 dead Americans. These premature declarations of victory have done more to undermine public support than the left.

If Iraq will have to depend on "honest" politicians, than the US venture is doomed -- but it doesn't have to. Limited gov't is the way to limit the corruption. Bremer's biggest mistake was in NOT having an Oil Trust to pay out cash to all Iraqis; or all registered to vote; or all voters. Are the Shia and Kurds forming more companies? That's a metric I think worth following, because a company implies trusting your partners and requires trusting your employees. Peacefully and voluntarily. Glad so many trends look good. Also glad the Sunnis plus Kurds stopped Shia uncontested domination -- politicians need to learn how to compromise.

The last paragraph is the understatement of the essay. Based upon what I'm hearing coming out of Bagdhad, I've never been more pesimistic about a positive outcome in Iraq and I'm been an unwavering optimist about progress on the ground since day one up until the last month or so.

This is where our diplomatic and military efforts have taken us. This is not magic it is the result of hard and dangerous work. A few have helped but many have hindered. Shame on them This is the road to success. God bless our troops.
