A rational, democratic, Left?

Filed under: General — site admin @ 2:33 pm

And add “a Left willing to defend democracy and freedom.” Norm Geras offers the Euston Manifesto.

The manifesto repudiates Stalinists and Stalinism. It’s a rationalist slap-down of narcissitic, self-promoting, dishonest fear-mongers of the Michael Moore, Cindy Sheehan, and George Galloway ilk. It’s also a repudiation of roughly eighty percent of the drivel published in The Nation and fifty percent of the drivel published in the rest of the usual media.

  1. The left without the idiotarians? What will they think of next? It’s been several decades since the left took a principled stance, rather than a strictly pragmatic adversarial stance. It might be nice to be able to respect a leftist again.

  2. Well, this is a welcome development. It makes sense that it started near Euston station, in the UK, which was surrounded by the stations bombed in London last summer. Perhaps it is also easier for elements of the British left to embrace common sense as Tony Blair, their center-left PM is such an articulate supporter of democracy and freedom around the world. I don’t know how well it will translate here, tho, with the all-consuming hatred for Bush on the left.
