Mexican presidential election update/the trouble in Oaxaca

Filed under: General — site admin @ 7:27 am

The Mexican presidential election will be held July 2.

I meant to link to this Bloomberg report from June 13. Lopez Obrador has now taken a 3 point lead on Calderon in pre-presidential election polls. Lopez Obrador remains at 34 percent (same figure as late May) and Calderon has slipped to 31 percent.

Meanwhile, the mass “teachers strike” in Oaxaca continues. It is just now starting to get major media attention in the US. The strike has been going on for almost a month. On June 14 (based on what I can tell from several contradictory reports) around 2000 Mexico police fought with the protestors in Oaxaca City. The protestors ha occupied parts of the town, including the city’s main plaza. Protestors had occupied part of Oaxaca City, including the town’s central plaza. The number of protestors involved in this sustained occupation ranges from 30,000 to 40,000– which strikes me as a substantial number for a month-long strike over low wages. One strike leader said the teachers are also protesting Mexico’s “repressive government.”

Governor Ulises Ruiz (mentioned in the Houston Chronicle article I linked to) is a PRI politician. The PRI remains strong in southern Mexico, but the PRD has made inroads. This article reports on how those inroads may tie into the Oaxaca protest.
