Kerry’s botched joke
No kidding. John Kerry is now claiming his insult at the expense of American soldiers was “a botched joke” aimed at the President.
Sheesh. Kerry is stuck on Vietnam, almost as stuck on Vietnam as he is stuck on his own self-absorbed, narcissistic bio-mass.
Instapundit has the background.
Kerry insulted America’s defenders. When I heard the statement on the radio this morning I thought “Yeah, that’s right, run through the damn Winter Soldier put-downs once again.” (That was his movement in 1971-72, when he accused US troops of war crimes.) No, this insult wasn’t at the level of the Winter Soldier accusations, but Kerry’s “joke” plays into the Left’s view of US troops– we’re all stupid, comparatively uneducated, and in need of rescue by…by John Kerry. He’s nuanced, see?
I’m listening to his latest statement (1:30 or so CST) and it is a re-hash of The Great Litany of leftish accusations. Reaction as I listen– this guy knows he made a mistake and he’s pedaling fast. Wait– now he says he is a real man. Yeah, he basically said he’s a real man. (Get a transcript!) If he’s a real man, he has the chance to prove it. Senator Kerry needs to debate his Swift Boat veteran critics. Man to man. Now. Not later.
In the spare space of 24 hours Kerry has resurrected the Vietnam Syndrome –at least his and the left wing of the Democratic Party’s Vietnam (loser’s) Syndrome. This is stupid but particularly stupid in the last week of a national election. Doubly stupid in the midst of a long, grinding war. Kerry is trapped, in an odd sort of amber. He’s stuck on stupid and stuck in the past simultaneously. John Kerry, the stegosaurus of American politics. (Okay, I’m unfair to stegosaurs, they had backbones and spikes on their tails– but the drawing at the link is cute.)
Why didn’t Senator Kerry just apologize? “I’m sorry for what I said. I meant to crack a joke and it came out sounding like an insult to US troops. Forgive me. We owe our defenders so much.”
But we know why.
Still, an apology like that would have been politically savvy.

Sen. Kerry is a low-class moron. No one with an iota of intelligence would have made the sort of statement he made about our troops in the last week before an election. He ,then, compounded the stupidity by lying about what he said and what he meant. It makes one wonder about the competence of the Massachusett’s electorate, which continues sending a dunce like that to the Senate. Sen. Kerry’s ego trip keeps him from ever admitting he was wrong, which makes me glad he wasn’t elected President, where his mistakes would hurt us all.

Actually Kerry was right about some atrocities in Vietnam. The part about cutting the ears off the vietgong. Demacratic Secretary of Defense ordered the army to cut the ears of dead vietnamese in order to have a more accurate body count. Apparently it was soon dropped because the troops didn’t like it. I remember seeing it on TV. I wasn’t on the ground but I bet if this is true, some of the ground troops would remember.

I think Kerry thought he was being humorous (and really smart) until he heard his own words and realized what he had just said. His mask came off briefly and the world saw the real Kerry. Too bad for him, too. Good for the rest of us. I blew it off the first time I heard it because I’m jaded to anything he says. But the next time I heard it repeated and thought about what he said and was thinking, I started getting VERY upset. He’s still just as treacherous as he has been since the 70’s. I figured it out. The script itself was innocuous: “I can’t overstress the importance of a great education. Do you know where you end up if you don’t study, if you aren’t smart, if you’re intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq.” This is the gist of what he was supposed to say: If you study hard, you get wise. Fail to study, and you’ll make a foolish mistake like Bush’s invasion of Iraq, and this mistake will have lasting consequences. (yes, that’s their idea of a joke–I will never accuse Kerry’s speechwriter of having a sense of humor) But Kerry wasn’t reading the script word-for-word. He was sort of winging it. He sees the first few sentences. Something about the benefits of studying. He’s talking to college kids and he’s on autopilot. So he tells them, study hard, and you’ll “do well.” There’s the fatal flaw: doing well is a matter of having good fortune, not being wise. He’s already off script, like a train that’s just switched onto the wrong set of tracks… you can’t see the oncoming train yet, but it’s there, and it’s already too late to prevent disaster. He looks down at the script to get the next sentence. You’ll see he sort of concentrates, but then starts moving again. Like he doesn’t quite get it, but he’s going to say it anyway, because he doesn’t want to stare at the script like a moron. Something about, or you’re stuck in Iraq. But he’s not thinking smart vs. foolish. He’s thinking fortunate vs. unfortunate. So he says, in effect, if you don’t study, you’ll be unfortunate and end up in Iraq like those other poor dumb saps. We all know that’s the literal meaning of his words. That’s why they’re so offensive. The question is whether he believes that meaning, just misread the script, or something else. He can’t use the excuse that he misread the script and left out a single word, because he wasn’t reading it word-for-word! Look at how much his remarks diverge from the script. I think too many of Kerry’s conservative defenders are putting too much emphasis on the fact that the script was innocuous. So what? What matters is what he said, and why he said it. — The flaw in the script: the part about studying leads to wisdom was entirely implicit. There were no words in the script as to why studying is good. Not studying is bad because it makes you foolish. We can backtrack from that to realize that studying is good because it makes you wise. Kerry was on autopilot, and he wanted to give a reason to study, so he gave typical college kid advice: studying is good because . . . you’ll end up well-off. You’ll have good fortune. That’s a great reason to study. Unfortunately, it was off-script, and it set him up for fortunate vs. unfortunate, instead of wise vs. foolish. D’oh. So remember: when you write speeches, if the reader is going to give it off the cuff, don’t be too clever and leave important elements implicit. Someone gave John Kerry a bad road map; he missed a turn and drove off a cliff. Whether this is proof he looks down on our troops, or is just a moron–I’ll leave that up to others. -Daryl Herbert

Dear Mr. Bay: Here is my read on Senator Kerrey’s imprudent “joke”: Perhaps Sen. Kerrey didn’t consciously intend to demean our soldiers; however, he has a 30 plus year history of denigrating our troops with plutocratic contempt. His comment may have been a freudian slip, or a sort of flashback to his Congressional testimony. It fits his historic statements to a T. If Senator Kennedy’s comment was indeed a “joke gone bad,” where was his thought process? President Bush had a higher SAT and collegiate grades and degrees from Harvard and Yale. What does this say about Senator Kerrey. Senator Kerrey has wonderful syntax, but mangled logic, no common sense, and no substance. Wayne J. Roques Pembroke Pines, FL

Mr. Roques, You hit the nail directly on the head. Mr. Kerry is anti-military and always has been. Kerry had a fruedian slip moment, where he actually said what I think he feels. That he sees anyone in the services as too stupid to game the system as he did. Then, instead of immediately apologizing and having this be a non-event, his arrogance fogs his thinking and he refuses to apologize for a day. Thus causing the resulting storm. I also think it exposes what the elite liberal mindset is towards the troops is. That we’re either too stupid to get a “real life” or that we’re some cartoon Gomer Pyle characters. They see us as needing their protection. It frosts my cake to know that he thinks my 14 months in Iraq working with the IPF is due to my being too “stupid”. All of my college degree grades are a helluva lot better than his pathetic ones. That all said, it is depressing that he came so close to being elected president…

And you Daveg, who the hell do you think you are saying that Bush is an idiot is pure arrogance? What would you call it? Is it your contention that insulting someone based on their perceived intellectual abilities and lack of work ethic is anything but arrogant, particularly when coming from someone with an even lower academic history? I’ll tell you who the hell I think I am. I’m someone that voted for Bush instead of bumble-mouthed Mr. Nuance, and I’m sick and tired of the implication that the guy I voted for is a moron, and the intentional implication that I am a moron as well for having done so. John Kerry because he was right about what he said… You calm and well-reasoned argument doesn’t quite help me understand what you’re saying here. Is Kerry right about what he actually said, or is he right about what he now says he said? Let’s assume the latter, for the sake of argument. He now claims to have been saying that the President of the United States was lazy and didn’t apply himself in college. With me so far? He then goes on to say that if the students in the audience follow that lead, they might end up as President of the US, and get us “stuck” in Iraq. My problem with this is that I don’t happen to agree that it was a mistake to stand up after eight years of Hussein corrupting the inspections and the UN oil-for-food program, attempting to assassinate an ex President, shooting at our aircraft patrolling the Kurdish regions to stop his genocide, or any of the other reasons we had to remove him. And I also don’t put a lot of stock in the “quagmire” Kerry was insinuating we have in Iraq. And even if I did believe the war was a mistake, I would not blame the President for instituting a military action that Mr. Kerry voted in favor of, after Clinton made regime change in Iraq a national priority which he, of course, failed to actually do anything about. And even if I did think the President was at fault, I would not attempt to insult his intelligence over it. You see, that would be juvenile, and one would expect an esteemed member of the Worlds Greatest Deliberative Body to be above that kind of pettiness. Especially a Senator that considers himself Presidential material. Are you clear on who the hell I think I am yet?
Comment by Daveg — 11/2/2006 @ 12:35 pm
Kerry ain’t that great a candidate but it is pretty obvious he was talking about Bush. Fact is that this has been said before and it’s supposed to be followed by ‘like president Bush’, but he forgot that part. This whole firestorm over a comment that was simply phrased wrong is pretty damned ridiculous, but Republicans are known for their ability to latch onto something and pound it into the ground until they get their way. Of course it was a mistake/gaffe, but the meaning was mis-contrued and also, Bush has said SO MANY stupid, ignorant, insulting, racist, sexist, homophobic, incorrect things that it is bizarre Kerry is only allowed to get away with a couple before the bashing brigade moves in.

Where are all the “brave” Neo-Con Republicans when it comes time to serve in the military and volunteer for duty in Iraq? If the Republicans support this war so much, why are so many afraid to sign up for service? Why have military recruitment goals fallen short so often? Why don’t more Republicans between the ages of 18 and 42 volunteer for service? I guess they are like their leader Dick “straight-shootin” Cheney. As he said when asked why he did everything that he could to avoid military service, he answered “I had other priorities.” I also am tired of being lectured by borrow-and spend Re-pork-licans who are too afraid to join the military or who have “other priorities.” So, if you are in the military, we applaud your bravery. If you have never served, shut up until you join up.

The U. S. Senator speaking to our California students was gracious enough to provide an example simplifying “The Commandments of John Kerry†enabling conservative Christians too understand him better. Can we have him speak more often? The Commandments of John Kerry 1. Thou shall substitute stereotyping, of a distinguished select group of people, to fill the void caused by a lack of substance in your argument. 2. Thou shall profile, every person making up the complete entity, with denigrating remarks to project superiority on your part. 3. Thou shall insult the intelligence of others to show those before you, who are faced with a decision, what could happen to them on this world stage if they chose to disagree with you. 4. Thou shall insinuate that the choice of an individual was not a choice at all; planting the idea that you will also be viewed as an ignorant person if you don’t think like I do. 5. Thou shall instill self consciousness in young naive listeners, who are awestruck by a real life U. S. Senator, implying that you will also be viewed as stuck in one of life’s flee infested arm pits of the world, completely helpless and not in control of the situation if you don’t think like I want you to. 6. Thou shall increase the use of rhetoric concealing insufficient power to handle the circumstances. 7. Thou shall intentionally belittle and terrorize innocent minds to subsidize your obsession for power, glory and fame.

You made a wonderful satire about John Kerry. Good job! John Kerry isn’t a great man because he made you guys bad mouth the Democrats. I bet someone will come on this website and will say that all democrats are bad and dishonest people, including me. Some of the Republicans say that all Democrats whine too much and I’m probably one of them. Screw that man! Republicans aren’t that great neither. Remember that joke Bush made about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq on March of 2004? So, before you critizize anyone else, get the log out of your eye. Clean your own house before you clean someone elses. Take care of yourselves. We democrats may whine a lot, but for a reason because there are a lot of things wrong with the Republican party as it is. You Republicans whine too, but for nothing, so don’t any of you go there. I’m also a Democrat, but I’m honest!

Daveg, I’m starting to get sick of you already and President Bush too. You and the people who voted for Bush are nothing but politically prejudice against the democrats. Bush is a prejudice president. He thinks that the democrats have no plan of fighting the war in Iraq. Well, guess what? President Bush has a poor strategy in winning the war. I mean, I just can’t figure out this garbage.

And now Democrats as a class are victims of prejudice and the vote that sent George Bush to the White House (twice!) was nothing other than an act of prejudice! Doncha just love arguing with the weakminded?

[…] Michael perceives it as Dylan going out of his way to make a statement, rather than just a casual joke. (Hey, maybe you could call it a botched joke!) Personally, I wouldn’t draw big conclusions from it — I think it was just a gag. The whole 7-11 bit was hilarious to me. A gratifying gag for us anti-socialized medicine types, by all means, but still a gag. […]

I still resent your comment and sarcasm you sent me. How dare you say that I’m weak-minded? Yeah duh, President Bush won the election twice. I’m not stupid! I don’t have a mind of a baby, thank you very much. You know, you really make me sick with that weak-minded crap. My temper has been very terrible ever since you have made that comment. You know what, I think that it was nice of you to say that I’m one of the weak-minded ones because you enjoy putting other people down.

There was something else that I didn’t like about your comment against me. I resent the fact that you say that I’m a stupid animal. Call me weak minded again and see what happens.

There were no WMD — not at least any that would work — Our presense in the Middle East is causing the hatrid for Americans - not hate of our freedoms — and Kerry — just another Yale, Skull and Bones puppet who was never ment to win .. and he had to really screw up to make George B look like a winner. Check out Ron Paul , the last true republican, conservative left in congress… Rudy J is no hero of 911, the rest , including all the Dems are a bunch of political hacks who are bought and paid for by the people who can print the money —-
