When the Washington press corps was almost a “get out of jail free” card

Filed under: General — site admin @ 9:20 pm

At one time the Washington press corps was almost a “get out of jail free” card for liberal Democrats– at least politically. Arguably, Democat scandals don’t get the full court press Republican scandals do. The Dems have managed to “redact” the Bartlett report and there’s little MSM press outrage.

But the internet and blogosphere are changing the game.

This essay by Democratic Senator Harry Reid is instant fodder for the Internet. Reid says Democats will clean up Washington. He won’t get away with that claim/ Heck, the contemporary K Street and Constitution Avenue crowd are Democrat creations. Repubs only moved in big time after 1994.

Here’s Harry’s promise:

This New Year, Democrats resolve to clean up Washington, so America’s government can once again focus on the priorities of America’s people.

What a pooh-bah.

I think all the crooks should go to jail. The Republicans must recover their reformist message of 1994. To get there means some Repubs will have to go to jail. Good. But according to this, Harry Reid may have trouble from the Jack Abramoff scandal. Reid denies it. The $61,000 Reid got from Indian tribes and Greenberg Traurig (in 2001) need a better explanation than Reid has given. (The Nation says it’s $6,000. )The truth is, all of the Beltway politicos have had contact with the sewer.
